Joseph Fewsmith (b. ). A China-watcher reading the open press as the register of elite conflict, in the era before interviews and archives opened. The method is the message: what the Party argued in public was analyzable, and the foreigners later historiography celebrates were invisible in that register.

Reception

The standard reference for 1980s reform politics for three decades; both cluster members mine it (Weber 39 mentions, Gewirtz 48) while neither contests it. Absorbed rather than debated: the field treats its debate map as settled furniture. Its limits are its sourcing horizon (open press only; no interviews, no neibu, no foreign-exchange channel), which is precisely what the later books added — without revising the map.
